SPIRAL OF LIGHT

“For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it. “
~Amanda Gorman

As the days grow shorter and we enter the cold, dark winter months, it is a time to remember the light we each carry within us, a light that can be kindled through our kindness, good deeds, and shared community. One of the ways Waldorf schools throughout the world remember and cultivate this inner light is through our festivals and celebrations of what it means to be human, to find the courage to overcome our own shadows and those in the world, and to find reverence for the simple encounters we experience day to day in our community. At Steiner, these celebrations of light begin with Michaelmas, a festival of strength and courage, in the autumn and transition through various Lantern Walks, Diwali, Día de los Muertos, Santa Lucia, and culminate with the festival of the Spiral of Light.

It is with much enthusiasm and excitement that we have brought this festival, beloved in our Kindergarten program, to the Elementary Grades, following a tradition in many Waldorf schools around the world.
The teachers created a spiral of evergreen boughs in the Assembly Room, lighting a single pilar candle in the center of the darkened room. One by one, each student carried a candle into the center and lights it from this central flame, then placed their candle along the spiral as they slowly walked out of the labyrinth. It is always magical to witness the room come alight with each flame that grows and swells into the brightness of the class community as each individual candle is lit and lands in its place.
Love is higher than opinion.
If people love one another the most varied opinions can be reconciled –
thus one of the most important tasks for humankind today and in the future
is that we should learn to live together and understand one another.
If this human fellowship is not achieved, all talk of development is empty.
~ Rudolf Steiner
