Meet Our Steiner Alumni: Ki Smith Opens An Art Gallery in Harlem

“I'm driven by the passion and desire to be the change that I want to see in my field.”

— KI SMITH, Steiner Alum

Ki Smith, Rudolf Steiner Alum

We are continuously curious to follow the life and careers of our creative, inventive and energetic former students. We recently asked Ki Smith, founder and owner of Ki Smith Gallery, about his time at Steiner:

When did you attend Rudolf Steiner School?

I attended Steiner 2002-2008.

How did Steiner prepare you for what you are doing now?

Steiner created a great community that I have carried with me. In fact, the first two solo shows at my newly opened gallery are of fellow Steiner alumni Sei Smith (’08) and Bruno Smith (’08)!

All of our shows are photographed by another alumni Roman Dean (’07). I have also started a book binding and publishing company (Handle With Care Books) with alumni Cecilia Smith (’11).

What drives you in your work?

I’m driven by the passion and desire to be the change that I want to see in my field. Ki Smith Gallery has not only implemented a $1,000 exhibition stipend for each of the artists we represent but has also pledged to do multiple exhibitions that give 100% of proceeds to the non-profit or charitable organization that the gallery has aligned with for the show.

Favorite Steiner memory/moment?

When Mr. Muck Tuck gave me an A on a 10 page paper which consisted of 10 blank sheets of paper with a very well designed cover page. That moment taught me the importance of presentation and first impressions.
