The school has adopted a Health and Life Sciences Curriculum that affects students from grades 3 to 12. In the lower grades, the curriculum gives the class teacher indications and suggestions for information already in the curriculum that might be articulated more strongly. By 5th grade, a specialist may be brought in to support the class teacher if desired. In 7th and 8th grades, the school psychologist, as well as the HS Life Science teacher, join the class teacher in introducing and discussing issues of nutrition, physical and mental health, sexuality, and community. The 9th and 10th grade health curriculum is more intense, and delves more deeply into teenage issues related to sexuality, body image, and mental health.
The school often engages outside experts to speak with our community. One such group is FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) who spends a week meeting with students in grades 7 – 12 to discuss substance abuse and addiction. They also offer evening lectures for faculty and parents.
